Dr. James Mwangi, Group Managing Director and CEO of Equity Group Holdings, has been appointed to the South-North Commission on Development, an independent body established by the German government to rethink how the Global South and North work together.

He joins 19 global leaders, including World Bank President Ajay Banga, WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Denis Mukwege.

Dr. Mwangi is one of two business leaders on the Commission and the only member from Africa.
Drawing on 35 years of experience in financial inclusion and economic transformation, he will bring an African perspective to the Commission’s work on building partnerships that mobilise capital, support entrepreneurs and businesses, create jobs and advance shared prosperity.

As Dr. Mwangi puts it: “Africa should no longer be seen through the lens of aid. It is a source of growth, talent, innovation and investment.”

The Commission builds on the legacy of the North-South Commission chaired by Willy Brandt from 1977 and will present recommendations to inform the global development agenda beyond the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Commission meets for the first time in Bangkok on 16th – 17th October 2026.
