Jambojet, Africa’s leading low-cost airline, was recently awarded “Most Compelling Story” at The Aviation Challenge in Copenhagen – a global initiative recognising innovation in sustainable aviation.
The award celebrates Jambojet’s partnership with Plastiki Rafiki, a student-led initiative that collaborated with artisans from Mathare to upcycle over 1,000kg of plastic waste into useful products, such as keychains and fridge magnets – all sourced from beach clean-ups, airport operations, and staff contributions.
Through this initiative:
- Students gained hands-on sustainability experience; artisans accessed new income opportunities.
- Plastic waste was diverted from landfill and turned into functional, saleable items.
- The collaboration supported environmental action, education, and local entrepreneurship.
- It formed part of Jambojet’s broader focus on community-rooted innovation and operational sustainability.
