The inaugural Eastern Africa Agroecology Conference that has been organized to address the realisation of Sustainable Food Production Systems for environmental and socio-economic development will start in Nairobi on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.

The three day event brings together participants from across the world to review interventions that are geared towards ensuring adoption of agricultural practices that are responsive to safe environmental practices and ensure safety in human health.

The conference comes at the backdrop of ravaging drought and seismic weather conditions that are threatening to destabilise the ecosystems across the world.

High level delegations including regional ministers from the Eastern Africa countries and cabinet secretaries are expected to grace the occasion that will run from March 21st to March 24th.

The conference will include plenary and breakout sessions, exhibitions, as
well as field excursions to agroecological enterprises.

The lead convening organisations under the Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA)
umbrella, in a run up to the main event, urged the public and private sectors to be cognisant of the negative effects of artificial farming inputs that have continued to increase the pace of climate change and hindered the regeneration of soils for agricultural
purposes.

Executive Director of the Biovision Africa Trust Dr David Amudavi decried the dire cases of starvation facing millions of Kenyans against the backdrop of large untapped agricultural resources.

‘It’s a crushing disappointment that we have people sleeping hungry in Kenya and only less than a quarter of our land being put under productive use,’ said Dr Amudavi.

He noted that adoption of safe farming methods and use of farmer-owned seeds that were traditionally used in the country is the only way to ensure that the country can have continuous supply of food for the population.
